VMWare Workstation Pro 16.0 Released

Announced the release of version 16 of VMWare Workstation Pro, a proprietary virtualization suite for workstations, also available for Linux.

The following changes have been made in this release:

  • Added support for new guest OS: RHEL 8.2, Debian 10.5, Fedora 32, CentOS 8.2, SLE 15 SP2 GA, FreeBSD 11.4 and ESXi 7.0
  • DirectX 7 and OpenGL 11 are now supported for Windows 4.1 and higher guests and Linux with the vmwgfx driver - with the following restrictions: DirectX 11 support is required for Windows hosts, binary NVIDIA drivers with support for OpenGL 4.5 and higher are required for Linux hosts.
  • DirectX 10.1 and OpenGL 3.3 are now supported for Linux host guest OSes with Intel/Vulkan drivers.
  • The graphics subsystem has been moved to a sandbox to increase security.
  • The USB 3.1 Gen2 virtual driver began to support exchange rates up to 10Gbit/sec.
  • Extended options for guest OS: up to 32 virtual cores, up to 128GB of virtual memory, up to 8GB of video memory.
  • Added support for vSphere 7.0.
  • Improved file transfer speed between guest and host, reduced guest shutdown time, improved performance on NVMe drives.
  • Added dark theme.
  • Removed support for Shared VM and Restricted VM
  • Security bugs fixed: CVE-2020-3986, CVE-2020-3987, CVE-2020-3988, CVE-2020-3989 and CVE-2020-3990.
