Wine 5.2 release

Took place experimental release of the open implementation of WinAPI - Wine 5.2. Since the release of the version 5.1 22 bug reports were closed and 419 changes were made.

The most important changes:

  • Improved compatibility of character encoding mapping tables with Windows. Files with encodings from the Microsoft Open Specification set are used. Removed encodings that are not present in Windows. The generation of NLS files for encoding tables has been implemented and the ability to use external tables for Unix encodings has been added;
  • Implemented the ability to use the null screen driver as a normal graphics driver;
  • The wrc resource compiler and the wmc resource management utility have improved UTF-8 support and added the ability to use external NLS files;
  • Problems with using ucrtbase as a C runtime have been resolved;
  • Closed bug reports related to the operation of games and applications
    OllyDbg 2.x, Lotus Approach, PDF-XChange Viewer 2.5.213, Star Wars, SumatraPDF 3.1.2, PDF X-Change Viewer, Spintires: MudRunner, Lineage 2, The Sims 2, Armed Assault, Arturia MIDI Control Center, Verbum 8, SmartGuard 3.0, Affinity Photo, Cadence Allegro Professional 16.6.

Additionally, it can be noted the publication of Valve updates the package Proton 5.0-2, based on the developments of the Wine project and aimed at ensuring that gaming applications created for Windows and presented in the Steam catalog can be run on Linux. Project achievements extend under BSD license. The new version eliminates the regressive changes that appeared in the 5.0 branch, leading to crashes when playing video and sound. Graphics issues in Subnautica and a crash when launching Planet Coaster have also been fixed.
