Wine 9.3 release and Proton 9.0 beta

An experimental release of an open implementation of the Win32 API - Wine 9.3 - took place. Since the release of 9.2, 23 bug reports have been closed and 295 changes have been made.

The most important changes:

  • Support for working through a proxy has been added to the Windows Internet API (WinINet).
  • Added a new mouhid.sys driver for pointer control devices (touchpads, mice) using the HID (Human Interface Device) protocol.

  • Work continues to improve exception handling on ARM platforms.

Additionally, we can note the publication by Valve of the beta release of the Proton 9.0 package, based on the code base of the Wine project and aimed at ensuring the launch of gaming applications created for Windows and presented in the Steam catalog on Linux. Proton allows you to directly run Windows-only gaming applications in the Steam Linux client. The package includes implementations of DirectX 9/10/11 (based on the DXVK package) and DirectX 12 (based on vkd3d-proton), working through the translation of DirectX calls to the Vulkan API, provides improved support for game controllers and the ability to use full-screen mode regardless of the supported ones in games screen resolutions. To increase the performance of multi-threaded games, the β€œesync” (Eventfd Synchronization) and β€œfutex/fsync” mechanisms are supported.

The new Proton branch is in sync with the Wine 9.0 release. The accumulated specific patches have been transferred from Proton to upstream, which are now included in the main part of Wine. The DXVK layer, which translates calls to the Vulkan API, has been updated to version 2.3. VKD3D-Proton, a fork of vkd3d created by Valve to improve Direct3D 12 support in Proton, has been updated to version 2.11.1. The Dxvk-nvapi package with the implementation of the NVAPI library on top of DXVK has been updated to version 0.6.4. 0.6.2.
