Release of WineVDM 0.8, layers for running 16-bit Windows applications

A new version of WineVDM 0.8 has been released - a compatibility layer for running 16-bit Windows applications (Windows 1.x, 2.x, 3.x) on 64-bit operating systems, translating calls from programs written for Win16 into Win32 calls. Binding of launched programs to WineVDM is supported, as well as the work of installers, which makes working with 16-bit programs indistinguishable for the user from working with 32-bit ones. The project code is distributed under the GPLv2 license and is based on the developments of the Wine project.

Among the changes compared to the previous release:

  • Installation simplified.
  • Added support for DDB (device dependent bitmaps), for example, allowing you to play the game Fields of Battle.
  • Added a subsystem for running programs that require real processor mode and do not run on versions of Windows 3.0 and higher. In particular, Balance of Power runs without rework.
  • Installer support has been improved so that shortcuts to installed programs appear in the Start menu.
  • Added support for running ReactOS.
  • Added x87 coprocessor emulation.
