Release of zeronet-conservancy 0.7.8, platform for decentralized sites

The zeronet-conservancy 0.7.8 project was released, continuing the development of the decentralized censorship-resistant ZeroNet network, which uses Bitcoin addressing and verification mechanisms in combination with BitTorrent distributed delivery technologies to create sites. Site content is stored in the P2P network on visitors' machines and verified against the owner's digital signature. The fork was created after the disappearance of the original ZeroNet developer and aims to maintain and increase the security of the existing infrastructure, user moderation and a smooth transition to a new, secure and fast network.

0.7.8 is an unscheduled release due to the significant 0.8 release being late and a sufficient amount of changes accumulating. In the new version:

  • .bit domains have been made obsolete: a redirect from the .bit domain to the site's real address has been made and the domain register has been frozen.
  • Improved copying of peers in the sidebar.
  • Improved start script.
  • Improved handling of command line options.
  • Implemented the ability to add / remove sites from favorites in the sidebar.
  • Added demo plugin NoNewSites.
  • Added package to AUR, Arch Linux User Repository.
  • Reduced host fingerprints available to unprivileged sites.
  • The secure version of ssl is enabled by default.
  • Fixed a potential vulnerability due to setuptools.
  • fixed ip address leak when loading geoip in tor-only mode.
  • Added installation and assembly instructions for the Windows platform.
  • Updated instructions for Android.
  • Improved browser startup handling.
  • Fixed regression when processing plugin configuration.

The only safe way to install ZeroNet at the moment is to install one of the active forks from source, install the zeronet-conservancy package from the AUR repository (git version) or Nix. Using other binary assemblies is not safe at the moment, as they are based on the version published by the developer "@nofish" who disappeared almost two years ago.
