Audacity 3.0 Sound Editor Released

A free audio editor Audacity 3.0.0 is now available, providing tools for editing audio files (Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, MP3 and WAV), recording and digitizing audio, changing audio file parameters, overlaying tracks and applying effects (e.g. noise reduction, changing tempo and tone). The Audacity code is distributed under the GPL license, binary builds are available for Linux, Windows and macOS.

Key improvements:

  • A new format for saving projects is proposed - ".aup3". Unlike the previously used format, all project components are now saved in one file, without separation into data files and a file with project parameters (such a separation led to incidents when only the .aup file was copied and the data was forgotten to be transferred). The new .aup3 format is a database in SQLite3 format containing all resources.
  • The Noise Gate effect has been improved, now allowing attack times down to 1ms and providing separate Attack, Hold and Decay settings.
