Calculate Linux 21 released

The release of the Calculate Linux 21 distribution is available, developed by the Russian-speaking community, built on the basis of Gentoo Linux, supporting a continuous update release cycle and optimized for rapid deployment in a corporate environment. The new release features a build of Calculate Container Games with a container for launching games from Steam, packages are rebuilt with the GCC 10.2 compiler and packed using Zstd compression, synchronization of Calculate Linux Desktop user profiles is significantly accelerated, and the Btrfs file system is used by default.

The following distribution editions are available for download: Calculate Linux Desktop with KDE desktop (CLD), MATE (CLDM), LXQt (CLDL), Cinnamon (CLDC) and Xfce (CLDX and CLDXE), Calculate Directory Server (CDS), Calculate Linux Scratch (CLS) and Calculate Scratch Server (CSS). All versions of the distribution are distributed as a bootable Live image for x86_64 systems with the ability to install on a hard drive or USB drive (support for 32-bit architectures has been discontinued).

Calculate Linux is compatible with Gentoo Portages, uses the OpenRC init system, and uses the Rolling update model. The repository contains more than 13 thousand binary packages. Live USB includes both open source and proprietary video drivers. Supports multiboot and modification of the boot image using the Calculate utilities. The system supports working with the Calculate Directory Server domain with centralized authorization in LDAP and storage of user profiles on the server. The composition includes a selection of utilities specially designed for the Calculate project for configuring, assembling and installing the system. Tools are provided to create customized ISO images tailored to the needs of the user.

Major changes:

  • A new build of Calculate Container Games 3 (CCG) has been added, providing an LXC container for running games from the Steam service.
  • By default, the Btrfs file system is enabled.
  • When setting up a user profile, it became possible to select parameters for screens with high pixel density.
  • Setup and synchronization of the user's domain profile has been accelerated.
  • ConsoleKit has been replaced by elogind, a variant of logind that is not tied to systemd.
  • The transition from the NT1 protocol to the SMB 3.11 protocol has been carried out.
  • The Zstd algorithm is used to compress binary packages.
  • Added the ability to use Calculate containers with LXC 4.0+ tools.
  • Fixed a problem with some laptop models (ASUS X509U) waking up from sleep mode.
  • Checking for updates when there are no changes in the repository has been accelerated.
  • Fixed configuration of packages, during the installation of which templates may not work.
  • Fixed reconnection of domain resources when exiting sleep mode.
  • Problems with the first boot of a reinstalled system introduced into a domain have been fixed.
  • Fixed preparation of the distribution for assembly using OverlayFS.
  • Fixed use of swap partition for hibernation.
  • Fixed incorrect detection of disks during auto-partitioning.
  • Fixed creation of system ISO images.
  • Fixed GRUB setting during installation.
  • Fixed checking for the presence of a bios_boot partition.
  • Fixed freezes when receiving updates from FTP mirrors.
  • Installation of NVIDIA drivers for cards that do not support version 460 has been fixed.
  • Changed system installation using Btrfs compression.
