Firefox Preview 4.0 for Android released

March 9 saw the release of the mobile browser Firefox Preview version 4.0. The browser is being developed under the codename Fenix and is considered as a replacement for the current Firefox browser for Android.

The browser is based on the engine GeckoView, based on Firefox Quantum, as well as a set of libraries Mozilla Android Components. GeckoView is a variant of the Gecko engine, packaged as a separate library that can be updated independently of the browser, while the rest of the browser components, such as tabbed libraries and so on, are moved to Mozilla Android Components.

Of the changes:

  • Implemented the ability to connect add-ons based on WebExtension API. Unfortunately, only uBlock Origin is currently available.
  • The start page now shows a list of "permanent" sites, a selection of which is generated based on the history of visits.
  • The ability to select the language of the application has been added to the settings.
  • Added the ability to open the site in case of an error with the certificate.
