Xfce 4.16 released

After a year and 4 months of development, Xfce 4.16 was released.

Many changes have taken place during development, the project has been migrated to GitLab, which has allowed it to become more friendly to new members. A Docker container was also created https://hub.docker.com/r/xfce/xfce-build and added CI to all components to ensure that the assembly is not broken. None of this would have been possible without hosting sponsored by Gandi and Fosshost.

Another big change is in the look and feel, earlier icons in Xfce apps were combinations of different icons, some of which were based on Tango, but in this version the icons have been redrawn, and styled according to the freedesktop.org specification

New features have been added, improvements have been made, and support for Gtk2 has been dropped.

Key changes without further ado:

  • The window manager has been greatly improved in terms of compositing and GLX. Now, if a main monitor has been set, the Alt+Tab dialog will only show up there. Cursor scaling options and the ability to display minimized windows in the list of recently used components have been added.
  • Two tray support plugins merged into one. There was an animation when hiding and appearing the panel. There are many small improvements, such as access to contextual desktop actions, Window Button now has an option to Launch a New Instance, and Switch Desktops optionally shows table numbering.
  • Added support for fractional scaling in display settings, highlighted preferred display mode with an asterisk, and added aspect ratios next to resolutions. It has become more reliable to return to the previous settings when setting the wrong settings.
  • The “About Xfce” window shows basic information about the computer, such as OS, type of processor, graphics adapter, etc.
  • The settings manager has improved search and filtering capabilities, now all settings windows use CSD.
  • MIME settings and Default Applications have been merged into one.
  • The Thunar file manager has a pause button when working with files, remembering the view settings for each directory, transparency support (if a special Gtk theme is installed). Now you can use environment variables in the address bar ($HOME, etc.). Added an option to rename the copied file if a file with the same name already exists in the destination folder.
  • The thumbnail service has become more flexible with the ability to exclude paths. Support for the .epub format has been added
  • Improved support for GPG Agent 2.1 in Session Manager and improved visuals.
  • The power manager plugin on the panel now supports more visual states, previously the battery only had 3 states externally. Low battery notifications no longer appear when connected to a charger. The parameters used for autonomous operation and stationary power are separated.
  • The garcon menu library has new APIs. Now launched applications are not children of the application of the calling menu, as this led to the crash of applications along with the panel.
  • Appfinder now allows you to sort apps by frequency of use.
  • Improved interface for setting hotkeys, added new hotkeys for calling Thunar and tiled window grouping.
  • Unified appearance of applications.
  • New default wallpaper!
