New version of Jellyfin media server v10.6.0 released

New version of Jellyfin media server v10.6.0 released

Jellyfin is a free licensed multimedia server. It is an alternative to Emby and Plex that provides media streaming from a dedicated server to end user devices with multiple applications. Jellyfin is a fork of Emby 3.5.2 and ported to the .NET Core framework to provide full cross-platform support. It has no premium licenses, no paid features, no hidden plans: it's just being made by a team that wants to create a free system for media library management and streaming from a dedicated server to end user devices.

In addition to the multimedia server and web client, Jellyfin has customers on all major platforms including Windows, Linux, MacOS, Android, iOS, Kodi and more. DLNA, Chromecast (Google Cast) and AirPlay are also supported.

In the new version:

  • The biggest new feature is SyncPlay, which allows you to create rooms that other users or clients can join for shared viewing. There is no limit on the number of users in a room, and you can join the same room with the same user from multiple clients.

  • Migration to Entity Framework Core. Previously, Jellyfin used a combination of multiple SQLite databases, XML files, and C# spaghetti to perform database operations. The information was stored in several places, sometimes even duplicated, and usually filtered in C# instead of using the faster processing of the database engine.

  • Updated web client. Significant refactoring was made, a significant part of the code that was inherited from the forked project in a minified form was rewritten.

  • Added support for the ePub format to the e-book reader. Other formats are also supported, including mobi and PDF.
