GNU IceCat web browser version 60.7.0 released

On 2019-06-02, a new version of the GNU IceCat 60.7.0 browser was introduced. This browser is built on the Firefox 60 ESR codebase, modified to meet the requirements for completely free software.

This browser has removed non-free components, replaced design elements, stopped using registered trademarks, disabled the search for non-free plug-ins and add-ons, and also integrated add-ons aimed at enhancing privacy.

Privacy protection features:

  • Added LibreJS plugins to block processing of non-free JavaScript code;
  • HTTPS Everywhere to use traffic encryption on all sites where possible;
  • TorButton for integration with the anonymous Tor network (to work in the OS, installation and launch of the β€œtor” service is required);
  • HTML5 Video Everywhere to replace the Flash player with an analog based on the video tag and implement a private browsing mode in which downloading resources is allowed only from the current site;
  • The default search engine is DuckDuckGO, requesting over HTTPS and no JavaScript.
  • There is an option to disable the processing of JavaScript and third-party cookies.

    What's new in the new version?

  • The delivery includes the ViewTube and disable-polymer-youtube add-ons that allow you to view YouTube videos without enabling JavaScript;
  • By default, the following settings are enabled: Referer header substitution, request isolation within the main domain, and blocking the Origin header from being sent;
  • The LibreJS add-on has been updated to version 7.19rc3b, TorButton to version 2.1, and HTTPS Everywhere to 2019.1.31;
  • The interface for detecting hidden HTML blocks on pages has also been improved;
  • Third-party request blocker settings have been changed to allow requests to subdomains of the current page host, well-known content delivery host servers, CSS files, and YouTube resource servers.
