Chrome OS 80 Stable Released

Google does not abandon the development of the operating system Chrome OS, which recently received a major update under version 80. The stable version of Chrome OS 80 was supposed to be released a few weeks ago, but the developers apparently missed the deadlines and the update arrived late on schedule.

Chrome OS 80 Stable Released

One of the important innovations of the 80th version was the updated tablet interface, which can be enabled in the following "flags":

  • chrome: // flags / # webui-tab-strip
  • chrome: // flags / # new-tabstrip-animation
  • chrome: // flags / # scrollable-tabstrip

We also added some handy gestures for tablet mode, which are activated in chrome://flags/#shelf-hotseat.

The Linux subsystem has been updated to run native applications. In Chrome OS 80, it uses stem Debian 10 Buster. The developers note that this made it possible to achieve greater stability and performance in using Linux programs on Chrome OS. Important: after updating the system, all native applications must be reinstalled due to the new Linux container.

Other important innovations in Chrome OS 80:

  • The introduction of Ambient EQ technology to automatically adjust the color temperature of the screen depending on the time of day and ambient light.
  • Added the ability to install Android applications through the adb utility (in developer mode).
  • Added picture-in-picture support for Netflix (Android app).

Current laptops and tablets on Chrome OS can already be updated to the 80th version, and enthusiasts can download the latest unofficial build on a special projectdedicated to this OS for x86 / x64 and ARM processors.
