Ubuntu 20.04 LTS released

On April 23, 2020, at 18:20 Moscow time, Canonical released Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, codenamed “Focal Fossa”. The word "Focal" in the name should be associated with the phrase "focal point", as well as having something in focus or in the foreground. Fossa is a feline predator native to the island of Madagascar.

The support period for the main packages (main section) is five years (until April 2025). Enterprise users can get 10 years of extended maintenance support.

Kernel and boot related changes

  • Ubuntu developers have included support for WireGuard (secure VPN technology) and Livepatch integration (for kernel updates without rebooting);
  • The default kernel and initramfs compression algorithm has been changed to lz4 to provide much faster boot times;
  • the OEM logo of the computer motherboard manufacturer is now displayed on the boot screen when operating in UEFI mode;
  • support for some file systems is included: exFAT, virtio-fs and fs-verity;
  • Improved support for the ZFS file system.

Major changes in the Desktop edition

  • There is a new graphical procedure for checking the system disk (including USB drives in Live mode) with a progress bar and percentage of completion;
  • improved GNOME Shell performance;
  • Yura theme updated;
  • added new desktop wallpaper;
  • added dark mode for the system interface;
  • added “do not disturb” mode for the entire system;
  • fractional scaling has appeared for the X.Org session;
  • Amazon app removed;
  • some standard applications, previously supplied as snap packages, have been replaced with programs installed from the Ubuntu repository using the APT package manager;
  • the Ubuntu Software store is now presented as a snap package;
  • updated design of the login screen;
  • new lock screen;
  • ability to output in 10-bit color mode;
  • Added a game mode to improve gaming performance (so you can run any game using "gamemoderun ./game-executable" or add the "gamemoderun% command%" option on Steam).
