Features and model numbers of the first Intel Ice Lake and Comet Lake revealed

According to Intel's long-term plan, with which we were able to become acquainted A few days ago, at the end of the second-beginning of the third quarter of this year, major changes were planned in the range of mobile processors supplied by the company. In the segment of energy-efficient solutions with a thermal package of 15 W, two fundamentally new types of processors should appear at once. Firstly, these are the first large-scale 10nm Ice Lake-U processors, and secondly, the first representatives of the 14nm Comet Lake-U family. Information about the model ranges of the respective families appeared on several Chinese forums at once, and we undertook to summarize and systematize it.

Even with the release of mobile Core processors of the eighth generation, Intel abandoned the one-to-one correspondence between the model number and processor design. For example, 14-series Core processors on the market can be based on Whiskey Lake, Coffee Lake, Kaby Lake, and Amber Lake designs. With the release of Ice Lake-U and Comet Lake-U, nothing will change: these two fundamentally different families will have similar model numbers starting with ten. However, while the 10nm Comet Lake-U processors will be called Core ix-10xxxU, the 10nm representatives of the Ice Lake-U series will receive slightly different numbers with the letter G - Core ix-XNUMXxxGx.

The official announcement of Ice Lake-U - the long-awaited 10nm chips with the new Sunny Cove microarchitecture - is expected during the second quarter. Processors of this type will be targeted at the segment of thin and light laptops, they will receive two or four processing cores, new Gen11 generation integrated graphics, support for AVX-512 instructions and compatibility with high-speed DDR4-3200 and LPDDR4-3733 memory types.

The Ice Lake-U lineup will include the following set of models:

Cores/threads Base frequency, GHz Turbo frequency, GHz TDP, W
Intel Core i7-1065G7 4/8 1,3 3,9/3,8/3,5 15
Intel Core i5-1035G7 4/8 1,2 3,7/3,6/3,3 15
Intel Core i5-1035G4 4/8 1,1 3,7/3,6/3,3 15
Intel Core i5-1035G1 4/8 1,0 3,6/3,6/3,3 15
Intel Core i5-1034G1 4/8 0,8 3,6/3,6/3,3 15
Intel Core i3-1005G1 2/4 1,2 3,4/3,4 15

As can be judged from the above data, the transfer of production to 10nm technology will not cause a significant increase in clock frequencies. Moreover, the older Ice Lake-U processors cannot even reach the 14nm Whiskey Lake-U processors in terms of their frequencies. However, do not forget about other reasons why new products may be more productive than their predecessors: a new microarchitecture and a noticeable progress in the performance of integrated graphics, which in Ice Lake-U will exist in several modifications, distinguished by the number indicated in the name after the letter G .

Based on what is known about the current state of Intel's 10nm process, Ice Lake-U supply will be limited at first, but Intel's thin-and-light laptop position could be strengthened by 14nm followers of Whiskey-Lake-U - Comet Lake-U processors. Their announcement is expected at the beginning of the third quarter, and the information about them looks very intriguing, since mobile processors with a 15-watt thermal package and six processing cores should appear in the Comet Lake-U family for the first time. However, we are not talking about all representatives, but only about the older Core i7-10710U processor.

Of course, an increase in the number of cores will inevitably affect clock speeds. And while the older quad-core Whiskey Lake-Us have a base frequency of 1,9 GHz, the Core i7-10710U base frequency will be only 1,1 GHz. But in turbo mode, the six-core Comet Lake-U will be able to accelerate to 4,6 GHz with a load of one or two cores, up to 4,1 GHz with a load of four cores, and up to 3,8 GHz with an load of all cores. In addition, Comet Lake-U processors will add support for DDR4-2667.

The complete lineup of Comet Lake-U will include processors with four and six cores and is as follows:

Cores/threads Base frequency, GHz Turbo frequency, GHz TDP, W
Intel Core i7-10710U 6/12 1,1 4,6/4,6/4,1/3,8 15
Intel Core i7-10510U 4/8 1,8 4,9/4,8/4,3 15
Intel Core i5-10210U 4/8 1,6 4,2/4,1/3,9 15
Intel Core i3-10110U 2/4 2,1 4,1/3,7 15

Such a set of processors, in fact, will overshadow the representatives of the Whiskey Lake-U family and become the main option for portable laptop manufacturers until Ice Lake-U supplies are in full force, and until Intel starts producing chips using the 10nm process technology. with more than four cores. And this, as follows from the available data, will have to wait a long time - about another year.
