Nearly 65% of US adults, or over 164 million people, play video games. “Gaming has become an important part of American culture,” said Stanley Pierre-Louis, President and CEO of ESA. "That makes them the leading form of entertainment today."
$35,8 billion was spent in 2018 on gaming content alone, excluding devices and accessories, up almost $6 billion from 2017. Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Red Dead Redemption II, and NBA 2K19 took the top spots among video games in terms of the number of copies sold.
According to the survey data, most parents limit the time their children spend playing video games, and also rely on age ratings to select acceptable content. 87% of parents do not allow children to purchase new games without their permission, 91% of purchases are made by adults themselves.
It's no surprise that smartphones are the most commonly used games, but more interestingly, PCs outperform consoles by 3%. Also, video games are increasingly capturing the beautiful half of humanity: about 46% of all gamers are women, while their genre preferences are much more diverse than those of men, and are more dependent on age.
Women aged 18 to 34 play games such as Candy Crush, Assassin's Creed and Tomb Raider and use smartphones most often to play games, while men in the same age segment mainly play consoles, in particular, to games like God of War, Madden NFL and Fortnite.
Older gamers aged 35 to 54 prefer games like Tetris and Pac-Man for women, Call of Duty, Forza and NBA 2K for men.
Older video game lovers lean towards puzzles and various logic games. Men aged 55 to 64 love to play Solitaire and Scrabble, while women play Mahjong and Monopoly.
The report also debunks one of the popular myths about video game lovers. Thus, gamers were no more inclined than other Americans to live isolated and sedentary lives. What's more, when you look at travel, camping, and exercise, gamers' statistics are marginally higher than those of non-gaming Americans.
