Wacom has unveiled the updated Intuos Pro Small, a compact, wireless drawing tablet designed for convenience and portability. The Intuos Pro Small is the latest in the Intuos Pro series to receive a design update; the Medium and Large versions, respectively, were re-released a few years ago with thinner bezels and an updated Pro Pen 2 with 8192 levels of pressure sensitivity.
At $249, the Intuos Pro Small is noticeably cheaper than the Medium ($379) and Large ($499) tablets. The design is almost identical. The only difference with the Intuos Pro Small is that it has two fewer ExpressKeys than the older models. It also doesn't offer the ability to replace texture sheets, which allows artists to customize the feel of the tablet's surface depending on whether they like a smoother texture or a rougher texture. The complete texture feels great and has only a little drag to make the canvas feel more natural when drawn with a pen.
The tablet is smaller than the old model, but it has a larger active area: at 10,6 x 6,7 inches with an active area of 6,3 x 3,9 inches. It connects wirelessly via Bluetooth to Macs and PCs, but the tablet can also be powered via USB-C and charged at the same time. The device comes with the Pro Pen 2 (which does not need to be charged like all Wacom pens) and is compatible with the Pro Pen 3D and Pro Pen Slim released earlier this year.
Intuos Pro Small also supports touch, so the user can use their fingers to zoom or rotate. Responsiveness roughly matches that of an iPad, and touch mode can be toggled on and off with a physical side switch. The ExpressKeys on the side of the tablet can be customized with shortcuts, and the touch ring can be used to perform actions such as zooming and adjusting brush sizes.
Compared to Wacom's Intuos beginner pen tablets, which start at $99 for the Bluetooth-enabled Small version, the Intuos Pro Small is designed for professional artists and freelancers who want to take their familiar tools with them on the go. It provides artists with all the features found in the larger Intuos Pro tablets, yet is quite compact.
