After more than 5 years of development and more than 800 comments in the discussion of the corresponding merge request (if you count the related discussions, then significantly more), the color-management-v1 extension of the Wayland protocol for color management and HDR is included in the main branch of the project.
This extension allows Wayland clients to obtain color properties of the data being displayed and fulfill requirements to support high dynamic range (HDR) displays.
The list of goals that this extension pursues:
- reliable control of color settings;
- support for professional color management applications;
- support for displaying TV programs and other high-quality video content;
- support for a wide range of monitors and application content, including Wide Gamut and/or HDR;
- providing basic color management for applications that do not support color;
- Provide adequate color management for Wayland applications that support color but do not manage color.
