'Wi-Fi that just works': $99 upgraded Google WiFi router unveiled

Last month, the first rumors began to surface that Google was working on a new Wi-Fi router. Today, without too much hype, the company began selling the updated Google WiFi router in the company's online store. The new router looks almost the same as the previous model and costs $99. A set of three devices offers at a better price - $199.

The design of the device is almost identical to the original Google WiFi introduced back in 2016. It is a compact, white cylindrical device with a single indicator light. Unlike the previous model, the company logo is now engraved rather than printed on the device. Google claims that 49% of the device's plastic parts are made from recycled materials.

For power, instead of a USB-C connector, the new router uses a cylindrical proprietary plug, like Nest smart speakers. The router has two Gigabit Ethernet ports. The router's slogan is "Wi-Fi that just works," and Google claims that's the reason its WiFi router is the best-selling mesh system in the US.

This is a dual-band (2,4/5GHz) Wi-Fi device that supports 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5). As before, this mesh system automatically optimizes the network. Each block can handle up to 100 connected devices. The router is equipped with a quad-core ARM processor, 512 MB of RAM and 4 GB of eMMC flash memory. In terms of security, Google touts WPA3 encryption, security updates, and the Trusted Platform Module.

The router is configured from the Google Home application. It is reported that the device provides coverage of about 140 square meters. The system of three routers provides a stable signal in an area of 418 square meters, which should cover the needs of many enterprises.
