Windows 10 may get a new Start menu without a tiled interface

According to online sources, Microsoft plans to update the Start menu in Windows 10, removing the tiled interface that has been actively used in the corporation’s operating systems for several years. It is expected that instead of a tiled interface, the Start menu will display the applications that the user interacts with most often.

Currently, Windows 10 defaults to a Start menu that contains about two dozen tiles, many of which don't display useful information. While the tiled interface is great on smartphones and tablets, most Windows 10 desktop users prefer the old-style desktop look and feel. After Microsoft announced the end of support for Windows 10 Mobile last December, updates to the tiled interface in Windows 10 have been discontinued. Although the tiled interface is supported by third-party apps such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, the menu items do not display information that would be useful to the user.

If the rumors are true, the Windows 10 Start menu will soon feature a cluster of inert icons for apps and games that the user interacts with. The redesigned Start menu is expected to resemble the Start menu used in Windows 10X, but the user interface will be tailored for PCs. The report says that the new Start menu may arrive in a future update.

Let us recall that the tiled interface first appeared in the mobile OS Windows Phone 7, and was later integrated into the desktop software platforms Windows 8 and Windows 10. Probably, the decision to replace the tiled interface with something else was made due to the fact that many users of it do not use.
