Windows 10X will be able to run Win32 apps with some restrictions

The Windows 10X operating system, when released, will support both modern universal and web applications, as well as classic Win32. At Microsoft claim, that they will be executed in a container, which will protect the system from viruses and crashes.

Windows 10X will be able to run Win32 apps with some restrictions

It is noted that almost all traditional programs will run inside the Win32 container, including system utilities, Photoshop and even Visual Studio. It is reported that containers will receive their own simplified Windows kernel, drivers and registry. In this case, such a virtual machine will be launched only when necessary. However, the devil is traditionally in the details.

The company said there will be restrictions on running legacy apps on Windows 10X through containers. For example, extensions for Explorer created by third-party developers most likely will not function. TeraCopy is also unlikely to work for copying and moving files.

Likewise, apps located in the system tray, such as apps that calculate battery percentage, volume control, or temperature monitor, may not work at 10X. Currently, the corporation does not plan to allow the use of such elements in the new OS. Although this may change by release.

It is also worth noting that the operating system will operate in β€œparanoid” mode. It will be able to run apps not downloaded from the Microsoft Store, but they must be in good standing and have signed code. But you won’t be able to use the registry editor to optimize Windows.

Microsoft promises that the performance of legacy applications will be close to native, but this will be known for sure only after the system enters the market.
