Xbox Series X will get an SSD on the Phison E19 controller: only 3,7 GB / s and no DRAM

A few days ago it became known that the solid state drive of the Xbox Series X console will be built on the Phison controller, but on which one, it was not specified. Now, from the LinkedIn profile of one of the software developers who worked at Phison, it became known that it will be the Phison E19 controller.

Phison E19 is a controller that is designed for use in mid-range PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe SSDs for game consoles, as well as cameras, tablets and other devices for the mass consumer. Note that drives based on this controller cannot be equipped with a DRAM cache. The Phison E19 controller supports up to 2TB of 3D TCL/QCL NAND.

The manufacturer claims for the Phison E19 sequential read speeds up to 3700 MB/s and sequential write speeds up to 3000 MB/s. Performance in random read and write operations is 440 and 500 thousand IOPS, respectively. That is, this is the speed level of PCIe 3.0 drives of the upper price range. By the way, the Phison E16 controller, which became the basis of the first mass SSDs with a PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe interface, is capable of providing speeds of up to 7000 MB / s, but it was immediately clear that such drives were unlikely to appear in consoles. Firstly, they are more expensive, and secondly, such speeds would be, perhaps, redundant for gaming systems.

Although the Phison E19 supports up to 2TB of memory, it is unlikely that such a capacious SSD will appear in consoles, at least immediately. Earlier it was reported that the Xbox Series X will receive a drive up to 1 TB, and also, most likely, a more affordable model with a 512 GB SSD will be released. Not so much for modern AAA-class games.
