Xfce moves from IRC to Matrix

After a 6-month trial period, official Xfce project communications are moving from IRC to Matrix.

The old IRC channels will remain open for now, but official are now channels in Matrix.

The change affects the following channels:

  • #xfce on libera.chat → #xfce:matrix.org
  • #xfce-dev on libera.chat → #xfce-dev:matrix.org – development discussion
  • #xfce-commits on libera.chat → #xfce-commits:matrix.org – notable GitLab activity

Previously, many IRC participants actively used bridge from Matrix.org, using Matrix to connect to IRC, which, among other conveniences, made it possible to do without a bouncer, synchronize chat history between different devices, lower the barrier to entry (which, according to some, Matrix has lower than IRC), and also avoid situations where the user who asked support question turned out to be offline when it was answered.

In July 2023 years Libera.Chat decided to disable Matrix-bridge. As a result, communication became fragmented: some users dusted off their IRC bouncers, others began using their own Matrix servers, and others simply remained in Matrix channels no longer connected to IRC.

To stop fragmentation and at the same time have the advantages of Matrix described above, after 6 months of testing and adding some Matrix bots, it was decided to give preference to Matrix for further communication.

It is recommended that all participants in the project's IRC channels install the Matrix client of choice and connect to new channels.
