Xiaomi withdraws GaN Charger Type-C 65W from sale due to dangerous vulnerability

Xiaomi had to withdraw from sale its Xiaomi GaN Charger Type-C 65W fast charger, which was introduced in February simultaneously with the announcement of the flagship smartphone of the Mi 10 series. The reason for the recall is the possibility of software hacking of the charger.

Charging adopts intelligent output current setting system and supports various fast charging protocols. Inside the GaN Charger Type-C 65W block, a memory chip is used to store charging protocols and new firmware. Third-party digital security experts have pointed out to the company that the chip used is not protected by encryption algorithms, so attackers can hack it.

Hackers can, for example, change the charging parameters, increasing the output current and damaging the charger. It is unlikely that it will be possible to damage a smartphone in this way, since all modern device models use a whole set of protections against overheating and power surges.

Xiaomi has already withdrawn the charger from all digital platforms as well as retail stores, citing so-called "emergency reasons". When the device will return to sale (and whether it will return at all) is unknown.

Xiaomi GaN Type-C 65W charger is designed using gallium nitride. The unit is 48% smaller than the original adapter that comes with the flagship Mi 10 Pro. With GaN Type-C 65W, you can charge Xiaomi 10 Pro from 0 to 100% in just 45 minutes - about 5 minutes faster than the original Mi 10 Pro charger.
