The first wave of updates will take place in June 2020 and will affect the Mi 9, Mi 9T and Mi 9T Pro, Redmi K20 and Redmi K20 Pro devices. The remaining smartphones of the company will receive updates in turn:

  • Redmi Note 7, Redmi Note 7 Pro, Redmi Note 8 Pro, Redmi Note 9;
  • POCOPHONE F1, POCO F1, Mi 10 Pro, Mi 10, POCO F2 Pro, POCO X2, Mi 10 Lite, Mi Note 10, Mi 8, Mi 8 Pro, Mi MIX 3, Mi MIX 2S, Mi 9 SE, Mi 9 Lite ;
  • Redmi Note 7S /Mi Note 3, Mi MIX 2, Mi MAX 3, Mi 8 Lite, Redmi S2, Redmi Note 5, Redmi Note 5 Pro, Redmi 6A, Redmi 6, Redmi 6 Pro, Redmi Note 6 Pro, Redmi 7, Redmi 7A, Redmi Note 8, Redmi Note 8T, Redmi 8, Redmi 8A, Redmi Note 9s, Redmi Note 9 Pro, Redmi Note 9 Pro Max, Mi Note 10 Lite.

One of the key focuses in MIUI 12 is the protection of personal data and informing the user about the potentially dangerous actions of any application. The smartphone owner can find out when a particular application uses the given permissions to access location data, contacts, call history, microphone and storage. The entire history of the application's actions is displayed on the screen with one click on the status of access rights.

To further enhance user awareness, MIUI 12 has added a notification feature for access requests. Pop-up messages in the top bar will appear whenever important functions such as location, camera, and microphone are launched in the background. By clicking on the notification, the user can change access settings and stop any suspicious activity. The operating system provides a wide range of options for responding to access requests from specific applications, including the condition "When using the application" and "Always notify".

Another feature of the platform is a nature-inspired and completely revamped user interface design and improved system animation at the kernel level. Mi Render Engine technology ensures smooth operation of the interface, and Mi Physics Engine is responsible for realistic icon movement trajectories, simulating the movement of real physical objects. A number of statistical data and parameters have become more informative and understandable due to the graphical representation. Visualization saves user time and improves convenience. And the Super Wallpapers feature brings NASA-inspired space aesthetics to your home and lock screens, animating famous images of the planets as you navigate your smartphone screens.

MIUI 12 also brings a ton of new features and improvements, including the following:

  • Multitasking. MIUI 12 supports floating multitasking. As the user navigates the system using gestures, floating windows make it easier to work with multiple applications at the same time and eliminate the need to constantly switch between them. Floating windows can be easily moved, closed and scaled using simple gestures on the action bar. For example, when a text message arrives on the smartphone while playing a video, the user can respond directly in the pop-up window without stopping the playback. This greatly simplifies multitasking on mobile devices, improving the speed and efficiency of a wide range of tasks.
  • Broadcasts. MIUI 12 improves upon the recently introduced Screen Sharing feature, which has made the smartphone a must-have tool for presenters. Now the user can start broadcasting documents, applications and games with just one touch of the screen. Multitasking is also supported here: the broadcast window can be minimized at any time. The ability to broadcast with the screen turned off reduces power consumption, and the option to hide private windows does not allow pop-up notifications and incoming calls to be broadcast to external screens.
  • Save battery power. MIUI 12 supports an improved battery saving mode. Due to this, most power-consuming functions will be limited in order to extend the device's operating time when the battery is low. Calls, messages and network connectivity are uninterrupted and will always be available.
  • Dark mode. MIUI 12 has received a new and improved dark mode. With a subdued color palette for menus, system and third-party apps, it delivers high visual comfort in low-light environments. When dark mode is enabled, the user can choose to automatically adjust contrast and brightness as ambient light changes. This feature can reduce power consumption on smartphones with OLED screens and eye strain in the dark.
  • Application menu. Many considered the lack of an application selection screen to be a disadvantage of MIUI - all icons had to be placed on the main screens. Fortunately, now Poco Launcher, which has proven itself well on Poco brand smartphones, will now become part of the Xiaomi shell. Its characteristic element, "App Drawer", has now appeared in MIUI 12. When enabled, all applications are automatically moved to this screen, freeing up the main screen. The user can automatically group icons in folders according to their personal preferences, as well as search for the desired applications.
