The core of high culture: Linux developers are less obscene in code comments

At the beginning of December, 2018 Jarkko Sakkinen from Intel corporation proposed discuss the issue of cleaning the Linux kernel codebase from obscene expressions. He prepared 15 patches that change the words "f*ck", "f*cked" and "f*cking" to "hug", "hugged" and "hugging" respectively. This gave positive effect.

By the way, quite a lot of specialists opposed this initiative. They noted that such an innovation could make some specific jokes incomprehensible. But there were also those who proposed much more radical rules. Kees Cook, former kernel.org CSO and leader of the Ubuntu Security Team, stated that the aforementioned swear words should be changed to "heck", "hecked" and "hecking" and the comments should be changed according to context.

To be fair, some programmers find it really unpleasant to read swear comments, but trying to replace some words with others or force rewriting comments can hardly be considered the best solution.

These data were obtained by analyzing the source code of the Linux kernel. Now there present about 4 thousand comments with the "TODO" tag. This is an indication of various shortcomings, planned future changes, plans and "crutches". Recently, their number has been continuously growing, although a small decrease was noted in early builds of the fifth version of the kernel. If developers start spending time fixing swear words in the comments, this can greatly slow down the development process itself.
