Yandex will start deleting from search results domains that point to more than 100 links to pirated content

Yandex has signed a memorandum that defines measures to combat pirated content out of court. Unlike the previous agreement, the new memorandum provides for not only the removal of individual pages with pirated content from search results, but also the complete removal of entire domains from the search results, for which more than 100 links to illegally hosted content have accumulated in the registry.

Such a measure is aimed at combating pirate sites that bypass blocking methods in search engines through the generation of new pages or subdomains. At the same time, the removal of entire sites from the issuance will not apply to the media, search engines, social networks, sites from the Registers of information dissemination organizers and other resources that are not specifically aimed at distributing illegal content.

Of the changes in the new version of the memorandum, it is also noted that it is extended to all objects of intellectual property, except for photographs, which will allow removing not only links to videos, but also links to musical, artistic and literary works from search results.

The new requirements will come into effect after the adoption and entry into force of the law, fixing the provisions of the memorandum. Until the entry into force of the law, the previous version of the memorandum will be in force, the validity of which has been extended until September 1, 2022. Over the three years of the old version, more than 40 million links to pirated content were removed from search results.

Links subject to exclusion from search results are accumulated in a special registry maintained by the Media Communication Union organization. Of the companies not related to the media industry, the memorandum was also signed by Rambler (now not considered as a separate search engine, since it has been using Yandex technologies lately) and Mail.ru Group (VK). Among the representatives of the media industry who signed the memorandum are Gazprom-Media, VGTRK, Channel One, STS Media, Sberintertainment (Okko, SberGames, SberZvuk), National Media Group, APKiT (Association of Film and Television Producers), AIV (Internet Video Association), Kinopoisk, Ruform.
