YouTube to Remove Videos Linking COVID-19 Pandemic to 5G Networks

Recently, false information has begun to spread on the Internet, the authors of which link the coronavirus pandemic with the launch of fifth generation (5G) communication networks in a number of countries. This led even to the fact that in the UK people have started setting fire to 5G towers. Now it has been announced that YouTube will fight the spread of misinformation regarding this issue.

YouTube to Remove Videos Linking COVID-19 Pandemic to 5G Networks

A Google-owned video hosting service has announced it will remove videos stating an unproven connection between the coronavirus epidemic and 5G networks. This decision was made due to the fact that such videos violate the policy of the service. It prohibits the publication of videos promoting "medically unsound methods" to prevent the spread of coronavirus infections.

YouTube said in a statement that the service intends to fight "borderline content" that can mislead people in many ways. First of all, this concerns videos dedicated to conspiracy theories linking coronavirus and 5G. Such videos will not be recommended to users of the platform, they will be removed from search results, and their authors will not be able to receive advertising revenue. It's worth noting that YouTube's statement came shortly after UK Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden announced it would hold talks with Facebook and YouTube executives to start work on blocking misinformation about the coronavirus and 5G links.

Obviously, YouTube's approach will help smooth out the aggravated situation in the near future. But of course, this will not completely eradicate violent conspiracy theories about coronavirus and 5G, so it is also planned to attract new supporters to content moderation.
