Over the past 12 months, more than 480 million mobile VPN apps have been downloaded from digital content stores for Android and iOS platforms, according to online sources. Compared to the previous similar segment, when about 311 million VPN applications were downloaded, there is an increase in the popularity of solutions in this category at the level of 54%.
Android users downloaded 358,3 million apps, accounting for 75% of total downloads. As for the owners of Apple devices, they downloaded 121,9 million applications. Such a significant difference in volume should not be surprising, since Android devices have a significantly larger user base.
The surge in VPN popularity is most notable in the Asia-Pacific region, which has seen significant political and social unrest over the past 12 months. In total, users living in this region have downloaded about 188 million mobile VPN applications.
Indonesian residents downloaded the most VPN apps (about 75,5 million, up 111% compared to the previous same period). In second place is the United States, with 75,6 million app downloads. India closes the top three (57 million downloads). Notably, India has seen the biggest surge in interest in VPN applications. In the reporting period, the number of downloads increased by 405%. Users from Russia downloaded about 11 million VPN applications for mobile devices in a year. Compared to last year, the interest of Russians in solutions of this type has grown by 19%.
It is also worth noting that 84,3% of total downloads come from free VPN apps. The most popular among users was the TurboVPN program, which was downloaded 51,3 million times.
