Why study Industrial Programming at HSE St. Petersburg?

This year, a new master's program is being launched at the Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg "Industrial Programming". This program, like the master's program "Software Development" at ITMO University, created in cooperation with the company JetBrains. Today we will tell you what these two master's programs have in common and how they differ.

Why study Industrial Programming at HSE St. Petersburg?

What do these programs have in common?

  • Both master's programs were developed from scratch in collaboration with representatives of leading IT companies and active scientists from various fields of computer science.
  • Education in both programs is very dense and is designed for students who are willing to spend most of their time studying.
  • Both at HSE-St. Petersburg and at ITMO University, the emphasis is on practice: during each semester, students work on educational projects under the supervision of supervisors, and at the end of the semester they present their results to teachers and classmates. In addition, between the first and second year undergraduates are required to undergo summer internships.
  • Both master's programs plan small enrollments, small groups in practical classes, regular student surveys, and other forms of close interaction between students and faculty.
  • Some teachers will work in both master's programs.
  • Location.

Why study Industrial Programming at HSE St. Petersburg?

St. Petersburg HSE building, where he works St. Petersburg School of Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science, is located across the street from the Times Business Center, where almost all ITMO master's classes take place. This photo of the HSE building at Kantemirovskaya 3A was taken from the window of the ITMO classroom.

Then what is the difference?

St. Petersburg HSE will specialize in machine learning and data analysis, allowing the applicant to master both basic and fairly advanced and modern topics in the field of machine learning and data analysis (more information about what students are expected in this program is written here).

MSc at ITMO University specializes in software development and related areas, including the theory of programming languages and the application of machine learning methods in software development.

As a result, these two master's programs practically do not overlap in courses: compare curricula "Industrial programming" at the Higher School of Economics - St. Petersburg and "Software Development" ITMO University.

Despite this, we want to keep the possibility of interaction between these two programs. What is it about? We want students of one program to have the opportunity to take courses of interest to them in another program, and vice versa. To do this, next year we plan to transfer programs to the online mode by concluding an appropriate agreement between the Higher School of Economics - St. Petersburg, ITMO University and JetBrains. In the upcoming academic year, we will offer students of both programs the corresponding courses as electives. In addition, some team projects that we will offer for student internships will also be general, i.e. students from two universities may work together on the same project.

Admission campaigns for both master's programs will begin on June 20 and will last until August 5. Choose the one that interests you the most and apply!
