The State Corporation Roscosmos announces the completion of accepting applications for participation in an open competition for the selection of candidates for a new cosmonaut corps of the Russian Federation.
The selection started in June last year. Very stringent requirements will be imposed on potential astronauts. They must be in good health, professionally fit and have a certain body of knowledge. Only citizens of the Russian Federation can enter the Roscosmos cosmonaut corps.
It is reported that since the start of the competition and until May 31, 2020, approximately 1400 applications have been received. Both men and women want to become astronauts.
βThe full package of necessary documents was provided by 156 applicants, including 123 men and 33 women. During the absentee selection stage, which will last until June 30, 2020 inclusive, based on the results of six meetings, the Competition Commission considered more than 90% of the applicants," Roscosmos said in a statement.
To date, 28 candidates have received invitations to the face-to-face selection stage - these are 25 men and three women.
Only four candidates for cosmonauts will be selected from the total number of applicants. They will have to prepare for flights on the Soyuz and Oryol spacecraft, for visiting the International Space Station (ISS), as well as for the manned lunar program.
