Ren Zhengfei: HarmonyOS is not ready for smartphones

Huawei continues to suffer the consequences of the US-China trade war. Flagship smartphones of the Mate 30 series, as well as the flexible display smartphone Mate X, will ship without pre-installed Google services, which cannot but worry potential buyers.

Ren Zhengfei: HarmonyOS is not ready for smartphones

Despite this, users will be able to install Google services themselves thanks to the open architecture of Android. Commenting on this point, Huawei Founder and President Ren Zhengfei said that Huawei's own HarmonyOS operating system is not yet ready for smartphones. He noted that even if the company needs to change this, it will take several years to build a full-fledged ecosystem.

During the interview, it was noted that HarmonyOS is characterized by low latency in the process. It is mainly suitable for industrial control, autonomous vehicles, etc. The software platform is well suited for use in products such as smart watches and smart TVs. As for smartphones, it is impossible for them to build a full-fledged ecosystem in a short time period.

At the recent IFA 2019 exhibition, Yu Chengdong, executive director of the consumer division of Huawei, said that HarmonyOS can currently be used in smartphones, but the development of this direction is not a priority for the company. Huawei representatives have always said that the company will continue to use the Android software platform and Google services for as long as possible. However, if Google bans Huawei from using Android, the first HarmonyOS smartphones could be the P40 series, which should launch next spring.
