NPD: In January, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot outperformed everyone in sales, but did not change the market trend
The next generation of consoles is getting closer, and therefore gamers in the United States of America are buying fewer games and devices for them monitored by the NPD Group analytics company. In January, even Nintendo Switch sales dropped. However, the month was not without major releases.
In January 2020, spending on consoles, accessories, game cards and games was $678 million, down 26% year-over-year, according to the NPD Group. But January 2019 was hard to beat when they released Kingdom Hearts III, Resident Evil 2New Super Mario Bros. U deluxe and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate continued to fly apart.
NPD tracks physical sales in retail stores, but also receives digital data directly from publishers. However, the statistics are not comprehensive, as Nintendo does not share digital sales of its games, and Activision Blizzard does not provide data from Battle.net.
