Alexander Baranov works at Veeam as the R&D Director and lives between two countries. He spends half his time in Prague and the other half in St. Petersburg. These cities host the largest Veeam development offices. In 2006, it was a startup by two entrepreneurs from Russia related to backup software for virtual machines (hence the name […]
We discuss the history of the OpenMusic (OM) software tool, examining the features of its structure and telling the story of its early users. Additionally, we present analogs. Photo by James Baldwin / Unsplash What is OpenMusic It is an object-oriented visual programming environment for synthesizing digital sound. The utility is based on a dialect of the LISP language — Common Lisp. It’s worth noting that OpenMusic can be used in […]
About a year ago, I firmly decided to save the world. With the resources and skills I have. I must say, it’s a rather modest set: programmer, manager, scribbler, and a good person. Our world is full of problems, and I needed to choose something. I thought about politics and even participated in "Leaders of Russia" to land a high position right away. I made it to the semifinals, […]
Typically, the question "why is mathematics necessary?" is answered with something like "it's a workout for the mind." In my opinion, this explanation is insufficient. When a person exercises, they know the exact names of the muscle groups being developed. But discussions about mathematics remain too abstract. Which specific "muscles of the mind" are trained by school algebra? It is quite different from real […]
Jakub Kądziołka published a proof-of-concept demonstrating immediate issues related to an error in the Rust compiler project that developers have been unsuccessfully trying to resolve for four years. The example created by Jakub allows bypassing the Borrow Checker using a very simple trick: fn main() { let boom = fake_static::make_static(&vec![0; 1<<20]); println!("{:?}", boom); } The developer requests not to use this bypass in Production, so […]
Microsoft continues to develop its virtual assistant Cortana in Windows 10. Although it may disappear from the OS, the company is already testing a new user interface for the app. The new build is now available to testers and supports both text and voice commands. Reports suggest that Cortana has become more "talkative," and it has also been separated from the built-in search in Windows […]
TL;DR: I'm impressed with Haiku, but there's room for improvement. Yesterday I explored Haiku — an operating system that pleasantly surprised me. Day two. Understand this correctly: I am still amazed at how easily it accomplishes tasks that are challenging in Linux work environments. I am eager to learn how it works and enthusiastic about using it daily. The truth is, […]
Mozilla's virtual reality web browser has gained support for Facebook's Oculus Quest headset. Previously, the browser was available to owners of HTC Vive Focus Plus, Lenovo Mirage, and others. However, the Oculus Quest headset is wireless, allowing users to browse web pages in a new way without being tethered to a PC. In an official developer statement, it was mentioned that Firefox […]
Mozilla has officially introduced the updated WebThings component — a universal hub for smart home devices, named WebThings Gateway. This open-source router firmware is designed for privacy and security. Experimental builds of WebThings Gateway 0.9 are available on GitHub for the Turris Omnia router. Firmware support is also provided for the Raspberry Pi 4 single-board computer. However, […]
Despite the widespread acknowledgment of the importance and necessity of testing software, and the fact that many people have long been doing it automatically, there has not been a single recipe found on Habr for setting up the integration of popular tools in this niche, such as our beloved GitLab and JUnit. Let's fill this gap! Introduction To start, let me outline the context: As all of our […]
Who will find this article useful: students who have decided to take up tutoring, graduate students or specialists assigned to a seminar group, older siblings when younger ones ask to learn programming (cross-stitching, speaking Chinese, analyzing markets, job searching). In other words, anyone who needs to teach and explain but isn't sure how to plan lessons or what to teach. Here you will find: […]
