After two years of development, a new significant release of the lightweight window manager IceWM 1.5.5 has been prepared (the first release in the 1.5.x branch). The 1.5 branch continues the development of an unofficial fork that branched off in December 2015 from the abandoned IceWM codebase. The code is written in C and is distributed under the GPLv2 license. Notable features of IceWM include full keyboard combination management, the ability to […]
This is a translated article from the Stanford seminar. But before that, a brief introduction. How are zombies formed? Everyone has been in a situation where they want to elevate a friend or colleague to their level, but it doesn’t work out. And the "not working out" is not so much on your part, but theirs: on one side is a normal salary, tasks, and so on, and on the other — the necessity to think. […]
The realization that I had entered a substitute import environment didn't come immediately. It was only when fresh PC shipments from the higher organization started consistently arriving with the 'Alt Linux' distribution on board that I suspected something was off. However, as I went through the stages of accepting the inevitable, I got involved and even began to enjoy the process a bit. At one point, I thought that such […]
It seems that Homer with his epics is something distant, archaic, difficult to read, and naïve. But that's not true. We are all permeated by Homer and the ancient Greek culture from which all of Europe emerged: our language is rich with words and quotes from ancient Greek literature. Just consider expressions like 'Homeric laughter,' 'the battle of the gods,' 'Achilles' heel,' 'the apple of discord,' and our native: […]
In the first publication (Using Thermal Potentials for Analyzing Territories), we discussed how thermal potentials can be used for territorial analysis in general. In the following publications, we planned to describe how information about spatial objects is stored in databases, how models are built from principal components, and what tasks territorial analysis may involve. But let's go in order. The use of […]
A critical vulnerability (CVE-2019-10149) has been identified in the Exim mail server, which can lead to remote code execution on the server with root privileges when processing specially crafted requests. The exploitation potential is noted in versions 4.87 through 4.91 inclusive or in builds with the EXPERIMENTAL_EVENT option. In the default configuration, the attack can be executed without complications by a local user, […]
After two years of development, the first preliminary release of the new mail client Aerc 0.1 is available, providing a console interface with tab support optimized for developers using mailing lists and Git. Tabs are switched in the style of tmux, allowing, for example, checking new emails and viewing threads of discussions simultaneously while writing a response and working in the terminal with Git. The project's code […]
"Cloud-native" or simply "cloud" applications are specifically designed to operate in cloud infrastructures. They are typically built as a set of loosely coupled microservices, packaged in containers, which are managed by a cloud platform. Such applications are inherently fault-tolerant, meaning they operate reliably and scale even during serious infrastructure-level failures. The flip side of the coin – […]
And what came of it Hello! In manufacturing, it is important to monitor the quality of products, both incoming from suppliers and the ones we produce. For this, we often conduct sampling – specially trained staff take samples and, following the provided instructions, collect specimens that are then sent to the laboratory for testing on […]
The release of the Linux distribution Zorin OS 15 has been presented, based on the Ubuntu 18.04.2 package base. The target audience for the distribution is beginner users accustomed to working in Windows. To manage the layout, the distribution offers a special configurator that allows users to customize their desktop to resemble various versions of Windows. It also includes a selection of software similar to what Windows users are accustomed to. The size of the bootable ISO image […]
This article will discuss software tools for backup that create a repository by splitting data streams into separate components (chunks). The components of the repository can be further compressed and encrypted, and most importantly — during subsequent backup processes — can be reused. A backup in such a repository is a named chain of interrelated components, for example, at […]
