Alexander Larsson, a developer of Flatpak and an active participant in the GNOME project, has introduced a new project called Gthree, which provides a port of the 3D library three.js for GObject and GTK. The Gthree API is almost identical to that of three.js, including the implementation of a glTF (GL Transmission Format) loader and the ability to use PBR (Physically Based Rendering) materials in models. Rendering support is provided […]

Polaris has been introduced to keep Kubernetes clusters healthy

Posted on

Note: The original text was written by Rob Scott — the lead SRE engineer at ReactiveOps, the company behind this announced project. We are very much aligned with the idea of centralized validation of what is being deployed in Kubernetes, which is why we are following such initiatives with interest. I'm pleased to introduce Polaris — an open-source project that helps maintain the 'health' of a Kubernetes cluster. We […]

Moto. Soaking AWS

Posted on

Testing is an integral part of the development process. Sometimes developers need to run tests locally before committing changes. If the application uses Amazon Web Services, the Python library moto is perfect for this. You can view the full resource coverage list here. On GitHub, there is a repo by Hugo Picado — moto-server. A ready-made image, just launch and use it. The only nuance is […]

Working and living as an IT professional in Cyprus — pros and cons

Posted on

Cyprus is a small country in the southeast of Europe. It is located on the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. The country is part of the European Union but is not part of the Schengen Agreement. Among Russians, Cyprus is firmly associated with offshore companies and tax havens, although that is not entirely accurate. The island has a developed infrastructure, excellent roads, and is easy to do business on. […]

A group of researchers from Virginia Tech, along with Cyentia and RAND companies, published the results of an analysis of risks when applying various vulnerability remediation strategies. By examining 76,000 vulnerabilities identified from 2009 to 2018, it was found that only 4,183 of them (5.5%) were used to conduct actual attacks. This figure is five times higher than previously published forecasts, in […]

CockroachDB is moving to a proprietary license

Posted on

The developers of the distributed database CockroachDB announced the transition of the project's source code to a combination of Business Source License (BSL) and Cockroach Community License (CCL), which is not open-source due to discrimination against certain categories of users. The BSL license was proposed three years ago by the co-founders of MySQL as an alternative to the Open Core model. The essence of BSL is that the code for extended functionality is initially […]

Memory on cylindrical magnetic domains. Part 1. Operating principle

Photo from the author's collection 1. Bubble memory, or memory on cylindrical magnetic domains, is non-volatile memory developed at Bell Labs in 1967 by Andrew Bobeck. Research has shown that small cylindrical magnetic domains form in single-crystal thin films of ferrites and garnets when a sufficiently strong magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the film surface. By changing the magnetic field, […]

Where to apply for university to study IT? + survey

Posted on

Although management, economics, and law have long remained at the top of the training directions in universities, the prestige of IT specialties has also noticeably increased recently. The question arises for prospective students and their parents: which university to enter and what specialty to choose? Is higher education necessary in IT at all? I don't even want to raise this topic — there’s so much discussion on this issue […]

So, over roughly a year (May 2017 – February 2018), I, a C++ programmer, finally found a job in Europe. I applied to dozens of positions in England, Ireland, Sweden, the Netherlands, and even Portugal. I had about twenty conversations over the phone, via Skype, and other video communication systems with recruiters, and a few less with technical specialists. I traveled to […]
