The maintainer of the Nouveau driver has withdrawn due to issues with inclusivity in the community.

Posted on

Following Hector Martin's announcement of stepping down as maintainer and ceasing participation in patch reviews, Karol Herbst, who maintained the Nouveau driver and the MMIO tracing mechanism (MMIOTRACE) working at Red Hat, has also announced his withdrawal. After their departure, there will still be two maintainers in the kernel supporting the Nouveau driver, who, according to Karol, are doing an excellent job. In […]

Version 25.2.11 of the file manager Yazi has been released

Posted on

Yazi (Chinese: «鸭子» means «duck») is an incredibly fast terminal file manager written in Rust, based on non-blocking asynchronous input-output. It aims to provide an efficient, user-friendly, and customizable file management experience. Yazi is distributed under the MIT license. Key features: 🚀 Full support for asynchronicity: all input-output operations are asynchronous, and CPU tasks are distributed across multiple threads, allowing for maximum […]

Go 1.24

Posted on

The new release of the Go language, version 1.24, comes six months after Go 1.23. Most changes affect the implementation of the toolchain, runtime, and libraries. As always, the release ensures the promise of compatibility with Go 1. Developers expect that nearly all Go programs will continue to compile and run as before. Changes in Go 1.24 now fully support generic type aliases: alias […]

The Serpent OS distribution has been renamed to AerynOS.

Posted on

The developers of the Serpent OS distribution have announced the renaming of the project to AerynOS and a rebranding effort. They plan to complete the migration of the infrastructure to the new name by March 17. It has been noted that the name Serpent OS was chosen hastily at the project's inception, without considering that the word 'serpent' carries negative connotations for some people (the tempted snake, a vengeful person). The developers have received numerous complaints about this unfortunate choice […]

Release of the Chimera distribution 20250214, combining the Linux kernel with the FreeBSD environment

Posted on

An update has been released for the Chimera Linux distribution, notable for using the Linux kernel along with utilities from FreeBSD, the dinit system manager, and the Musl standard C library. The build is carried out using the Clang compiler. Bootable Live images have been created for the x86_64, ppc64le, aarch64, riscv64, and ppc64 architectures, available in variants with GNOME (1.5 GB), KDE (2.1 GB), and a minimal environment (806 MB). The project aims to […]

A vulnerability in Musl is being exploited during text transcoding into the EUC-KR encoding.

Posted on

A vulnerability has been identified in the Musl standard C library (CVE-2024-2961), leading to a buffer overflow when converting specially crafted text from EUC-KR encoding to UTF-8 using the iconv() function. The vulnerability manifests starting from Musl version 0.9.13 and will be fixed in the forthcoming release 1.2.6 (a patch should be used until the update is released). The vulnerability was discovered by the maintainer of the libxml2 library during fuzz testing. […]

Asahi Linux leader has left the project after issues with advancing Rust in the Linux kernel

Posted on

Hector Martin, the founder of the Asahi Linux project, which focuses on porting Linux to run on Apple Silicon Macs, has announced his resignation as the project lead and the end of development. The members of Asahi Linux have formed a governing council consisting of 7 developers. The council will make decisions collectively and coordinate the project's work together. The reason for the departure […]

The Wayland color-management-v1 protocol has been added to upstream.

Posted on

After more than 5 years of development and over 800 comments in the discussion of the related merge request (significantly more if you include associated discussions), the color-management-v1 extension of the Wayland protocol for color management and HDR has been included in the main branch of the project. This extension allows Wayland clients to retrieve color properties of displayed data and meet requirements for supporting displays with extended dynamic range […]

Discussion on increasing the timer frequency in the Linux kernel to 1000Hz by default

Posted on

An engineer from Google proposed raising the default timer interrupt frequency in the Linux kernel to 1000Hz, which will result in increased task switching frequency and reduced time quantums in the task scheduler. Currently, the default is set to 250Hz as a compromise between performance, latency, and power consumption. When using displays with a refresh rate of 120Hz, typical […]

The openSUSE Tumbleweed distribution has switched to using SELinux by default.

Posted on

The developers of the openSUSE project announced the transition of the openSUSE Tumbleweed distribution, which employs a rolling release cycle, to the use of SELinux for mandatory access control. Starting with the update 20250211, SELinux in 'enforcing' mode is suggested by default for new installations of openSUSE Tumbleweed. Pre-built virtual machine images of openSUSE Tumbleweed minimalVM will now come with SELinux enabled by default. Support for […]

Release of DuckDB Database 1.2.0

Posted on

The release of DuckDB 1.2.0 has been published, which is aimed at executing analytical queries and conceptually resembles SQLite. DuckDB combines features of SQLite, such as compactness, embedding as a library, storing the database in a single file, and a CLI interface, with capabilities and optimizations for executing analytical queries that cover a significant portion of stored data, such as aggregating all the contents of tables or merging several […]

Vifm 0.14

Posted on

On February 8, after more than a year and a half of development, version 0.14 of the console file manager Vifm was released, featuring Vim-like modal control and some ideas borrowed from the mail client mutt. Vifm is written in C and is distributed under the GNU GPL 2 license. To extend its capabilities, an embedded Lua interpreter can be used. Change list: Use of Unicode normalization during […]
