On June 23, version 9.1 titled ‘met een hongerig paard aan ons been’ of the GNU nano console editor was released. Changes: The viewing area during search is aligned to the left where possible. The ability to read and write files in the old Mac format (i.e., files that use a single carriage return as the end-of-line character) has been removed. The ^T switch has been eliminated […]
An engineer from Intel made a single-line change to the GCC compiler set, increasing the weight of incorrect branch prediction on x86 processors. This change improved the performance of the generated code by 12.7% in the 544.nab_r test with optimizations "-O2 -mtune=graniterapids" for Intel Granite Rapids/Xeon 6 CPUs, and by 12.1% with optimizations "-O2 -mtune=znver5" on AMD Zen5 CPUs. The change […]
System76, the company behind the Pop!_OS Linux distribution, has released COSMIC desktop environment version 1.1.0. Packages for COSMIC 1.1.0 are available in the Pop!_OS 24.04 distribution and will soon be available in Fedora, NixOS, Arch Linux, openSUSE, Aeyrin OS, Redox, and CachyOS. The code is written in Rust and is distributed under GPLv3 (applications) and MPL-2.0 (libraries) licenses. COSMIC is being developed as a universal […]
The release of Brave Origin, a minimalist version of Brave, has taken place. Brave is an internet browser, a fork of Chromium, supported by Brave Software. This company was founded by Brendan Eich, the creator of the JavaScript programming language and former CTO of Mozilla Corporation. Brave is developed under the 'open core' model: the source code patches for Chromium are available on GitHub, but the binary packages are built in a closed manner and contain the following […]
On June 18, after more than a month of development, version 0.12.0 of the ZXC library and cross-platform console utility was released (github.com), implementing high-performance multithreaded lossless compression optimized for game resources, firmware, and application packages. The format is designed based on the principle of 'write once, read many' (WORM). Unlike codecs such as LZ4, ZXC sacrifices compression speed for maximum […]
Cloudflare, Google, Mozilla, Microsoft, and Shopify have introduced a joint project to develop and standardize the Private Access Control Tokens (PACT) protocol, enabling the separation of real users and legitimately operating bots from junk traffic and uncontrolled AI bot activity while preserving user privacy. It is claimed that the new protocol will allow filtering bot traffic on websites using anonymous tokens, bypassing […]
After 6 months of development, the first preview release of the Xfwl4 composite server, which uses the Wayland protocol, has been presented. Xfwl4 is written in Rust using the Smithay library. The reason for creating a new composite server is attributed to the unsuccessful attempt to implement simultaneous support for X11 and Wayland within the existing codebase of the xfwm4 window manager, which was originally designed for tight integration with the protocol […]
After 6 months of development, the release of the postmarketOS project 26.06 has been presented, which develops a Linux distribution for mobile devices based on the Alpine Linux package base, the standard C library Musl, and the BusyBox utility set. The goal of the project is to provide a Linux distribution for smartphones and tablets that is independent of the lifecycle support of official firmware and not tied to standard solutions from major industry players. Builds […]
The release of the XLibre project version 25.2.0 has been published, which develops a fork of the X.Org Server. The first release of the XLibre XServer 25.2.0 branch is presented as a beta-quality version intended for testing and identifying potential issues. Several more beta versions are planned to be released subsequently, after which the branch will be declared stable. XLibre is used by default in the Artix Linux, GhostBSD, OpenMandriva, and Vendefoul Wolf distributions. For Arch Linux, […]
After three months of development, the release of the system manager systemd 261 is now available. Key changes include preparation for API support for age verification, support for the Kexec Handover and Live Update Orchestration subsystems for state-preserving restarts, the IMDS (Instance Metadata Service) subsystem, functionality for boot protection on systems without a physical TPM (Trusted Platform Module), and the systemd-sysinstall component which implements an installer. Among […]
