Release of the PostgreSQL 12 DBMS

Posted on

After a year of development, the new stable branch of the PostgreSQL database management system, version 12, has been released. Updates for this new branch will be available for five years until November 2024. Key innovations include the addition of support for 'generated columns,' whose values are calculated based on expressions covering the values of other columns in the same table (analogous to views, but for individual columns). Generated columns can be two […]

We disable the local console when using x11vnc

Hello everyone, there are many articles online about how to set up remote access to an existing Xorg session via x11vnc, but I couldn't find anywhere how to disable the local monitor and input so that anyone sitting next to the remote computer can't see what you're doing or press buttons in your session. Below is my […]

When talking about MDM, which stands for Mobile Device Management, people often immediately think of a kill switch that remotely destroys a lost phone at the command of a security staff member. This does exist, although without any pyrotechnic effects. However, there are many other routine tasks that are much simpler and less painful to perform with MDM. Businesses strive for optimization and unification of processes. And […]

Automated Control System for the bucket excavator

Posted on

Introduction You can see an excavator at any construction site in the city. A regular excavator is operated by a single operator. Complex automation systems are not required for its management. But what if the excavator is many times larger than usual, reaches the height of a five-story building, can fit a Land Cruiser in its bucket, and its 'filling' consists of electric motors, cables, and gears the size of a car? And it works […]

Why you need to drop everything and learn Swift and Kotlin right now

If you don't have a flip phone, you probably have wanted to create your mobile app at least once. Improve some task manager or client for Habr. Or implement a long-standing idea, like those students who wrote an app to find movies in the evening in 10 seconds by clicking on an emoji. Or come up with something fun, like an app for a treadmill […]

GNOME is adapted for management through systemd

Benjamin Berg, one of the engineers at Red Hat working on GNOME development, summarized the results of the transition of GNOME to session management solely with systemd, without using the gnome-session process. Systemd-logind has long been used for managing GNOME logins, tracking session states tied to users, managing session IDs, and handling switching between active sessions […]

The trade associations NCTA, CTIA, and USTelecom, representing the interests of internet providers, have approached the U.S. Congress to draw attention to the issues with the implementation of DNS over HTTPS (DoH) and request detailed information from Google regarding its current and future plans for integrating DoH into its products, as well as securing a commitment not to enable centralized processing by default […]

Internet has been turned off in Iraq

Amid ongoing mass unrest, an attempt has been made in Iraq to completely block access to the internet. Currently, connectivity has been lost with approximately 75% of Iraqi providers, including all major telecommunications operators. Access remains only in certain cities in northern Iraq (for example, the Kurdish Autonomous Region), which have separate network infrastructure and an autonomous status. Initially, authorities tried to block access […]

The Future of Li-Fi: Polariton, Exciton, Photon, and a Touch of Tungsten Disulfide

Posted on

For many years, scientists from around the world have been engaged in two activities — inventing and improving. Sometimes, it’s unclear which of these is more challenging. Take, for example, ordinary LEDs, which seem so simple and common that we hardly pay them any attention. But if you add a bit of excitons, a pinch of polaritons, and tungsten disulfide to […]
