In addition to the head of the European Central Bank, the heads of the Central Banks of Great Britain, Japan, Canada, Sweden and Switzerland will participate in the negotiations. A representative of the Bank of Japan said that the exact date of the meeting has not yet been determined. He also noted that central banks must respond flexibly to rapid digitalization in order to continue to be relevant as money issuers.

Representatives of the central banks of the previously mentioned countries announced last month their intention to hold a meeting to discuss issues related to the launch of digital currencies. In addition, the meeting is scheduled to consider ways to optimize cross-border settlements and security issues that need to be addressed if Central Banks issue digital currencies in the future. It is expected that the interim report on the results of the meeting will be prepared by June this year, and its final version will appear by autumn.

Central banks around the world are considering launching their own digital currencies. Of the major central banks, China has taken the lead in developing its digital currency, although not much is known about this project. The Central Bank of Japan conducted a research project in this area together with the European Central Bank, but said that it does not plan to issue its own digital currency in the near future.
