ProtonVPN has released a new Linux console client

A new free ProtonVPN client for Linux has been released. The new version 2.0 has been rewritten from scratch in Python. Not that the old bash-script client was bad. On the contrary, all the main metrics were there, and even a working kill-switch. But the new client works better, faster and much more stable, and has many new features.

Key features in the new version:

  • Kill-switch - allows you to block the main Internet connection when the VPN connection is broken. Not a byte past! The kill-switch prevents IP addresses and DNS queries from being exposed if you are disconnected from the VPN server for some reason.
  • Split Tunneling - allows you to exclude certain IP addresses from the VPN tunnel. By excluding certain IP addresses from your VPN connection, you can browse the internet as if you were in two places at the same time.
  • Performance Improvements - The code has been heavily optimized to support Linux platforms more easily and reliably. A more stable and faster algorithm will help determine which VPN server will support the highest connection speed.
  • Security improvements - Many changes have been made to prevent DNS leaks and IPv6 leaks.
