Sony has not yet decided on the cost of the PlayStation 5 console

According to online sources, the Japanese company Sony has not yet decided on the retail price of its next-generation PlayStation 5 console. This may partly be due to the fact that the manufacturer wants to know how much the Xbox Series X will cost.

Sony has not yet decided on the cost of the PlayStation 5 console

This week, Sony reported quarterly earnings. Among other things, it was announced that this year was recorded the lowest level of sales during the Christmas holidays. While 2018 million PS8,1 consoles were sold during the holiday season in 4, only 2019 million were sold in 6,1.

Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki spoke about the company's intention to ensure a "smooth transition" from PS4 to PS5. In his opinion, for this it is necessary to control the cost of labor and personnel, having prepared the necessary stock in order to avoid a shortage at the start of sales. By a smooth transition, he means achieving some kind of balance between production and shipments of the PS5. Mr. Totoki is confident that the company will be able to choose the right strategy that will allow you to make a profit throughout the entire life cycle of the product.

In addition, he noted that Sony cannot control the "price level" in the next-generation console segment. Sony is likely waiting to announce the price of the Xbox Series X before pricing its PS5 console to keep it competitive.

β€œWe operate in a competitive environment, so at this point in time it is difficult to discuss the cost of a product, because there are factors that are difficult to take into account in advance. Depending on the price level, we may have to adjust the promotion strategy,” Mr. Totoki said.
