The developers of postmarketOS, a distribution for smartphones based on Alpine Linux, Musl, and BusyBox, have implemented the option of using a user interface for smartwatches, based on the work of the AsteroidOS project. The postmarketOS distribution was initially developed for smartphones and provided the possibility of using different user interfaces, including KDE Plasma Mobile, Phosh, and Sxmo. Enthusiasts have been developing ports of postmarketOS for LG G Watch and LG G Watch R smartwatches for several years, which had previously been limited to the ability to boot in command-line mode, as the user interfaces available in postmarketOS for smartphones are too heavy and not suitable for such devices. <\/p>\n

The solution was to create a port of the Asteroid interface, specially prepared for smartwatches. This interface is developed by the AsteroidOS project and was initially used in conjunction with the Mer system environment. Asteroid includes a selection of necessary applications for smartwatches, written in Qt 5 using QML and operating in the asteroid-launcher shell environment, which includes compositing. server<\/a> based on the Wayland protocol.

The postmarketOS environment is highly unified, moving all specific components for particular devices into separate packages, while all other packages are identical for all devices and based on standard packages from Alpine Linux, chosen as one of the most compact and secure distributions.
