After more than a year of development, the Lakka 3.0 distribution has been released, allowing computers, set-top boxes, or single-board computers to be turned into full-fledged gaming consoles for running retro games. The project is a modification of the LibreELEC distribution, initially designed for creating home theaters. Lakka builds are available for i386, x86_64 (Intel, NVIDIA, or AMD GPUs), Raspberry Pi 1-4, Orange Pi, Cubieboard, Cubieboard2, Cubietruck, Banana Pi, Hummingboard, Cubox-i, Odroid C1\/C1+\/XU3\/XU4, etc. To install, you simply need to write the distribution to an SD card or USB drive, connect a gamepad, and boot the system. <\/p>\n

At the core of Lakka is the RetroArch game console emulator, which provides emulation for a wide range of devices and supports features such as multiplayer gaming, save states, image quality enhancement of older games using shaders, rewind functionality, hotplugging of gamepads, and video streaming. Emulated consoles include Atari 2600\/7800\/Jaguar\/Lynx, Game Boy, Mega Drive, NES, Nintendo 64\/DS, PCEngine, PSP, Sega 32X\/CD, SuperNES, etc. Gamepads from existing gaming consoles are supported, including Playstation 3, Dualshock 3, 8bitdo, Xbox 1, and Xbox360. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The new release is built on the LibreELEC 9.2 package base and is notable for including support for the Vulkan graphics API on systems with AMD and Intel GPUs, as well as on Raspberry Pi 4 boards. Support for Nintendo Joy-Con game controllers has been added. Support for new devices has been implemented: Nintendo Switch, Odroid Go Advance, Anbernic RG351P\/M, V\/Gameforce Chi, and boards with iMX6 chips. <\/p>\n

The RetroArch emulator has been updated to version 1.9.3, which includes a screensaver, a menu for pairing Bluetooth devices, improved search options, and a universal search across all playlists, simplified key remapping, and a menu for configuring the CPU governor. <\/p>\n
