Petr Hosek, who leads the team at Google responsible for build systems, compilers, and developer tools, presented the first device that will be equipped with the Fuchsia operating system. The Fuchsia-based firmware will start being delivered to smart photo frames for the Nest Hub as part of an experimental update for participants of the Google Preview Program. <\/p>\n
If no unforeseen issues arise during the trial rollout, the Fuchsia-based firmware will also be applied to other Nest Hub users' devices, who won't notice any differences as the interface built on the Flutter framework will remain the same; only the low-level components of the operating system will change. Previously, the devices released since 2018, combining the functions of a photo frame, multimedia system, and smart home management interface, used firmware based on the Cast shell and the Linux kernel. <\/p>\n
It's worth noting that since 2016, Google has been developing a universal operating system under the Fuchsia project, capable of running on all types of devices, from workstations and smartphones to embedded and consumer electronics. The development takes into account the experience gained from creating the Android platform and addresses shortcomings in scalability and security. <\/p>\n
The system is based on the Zircon microkernel, which is derived from the LK project and extended for use on various classes of devices, including smartphones and personal computers. Zircon extends LK with support for processes and shared libraries, a user-level interface, an object handling system, and a security model based on capability. Drivers are implemented as dynamic libraries running in user space, loaded by the devhost process, and managed by the device manager (devmg, Device Manager). <\/p>\n
Fuchsia has its own graphical interface developed in Dart using the Flutter framework. The project also includes the development of the user interface framework Peridot, the package manager Fargo, the standard library libc, the rendering system Escher, the Vulkan driver Magma, the compositor Scenic, the file systems MinFS, MemFS, ThinFS (FAT in Go), and Blobfs, as well as the partition manager FVM. For application development, support is provided for C\/C++ and Dart, with Rust permitted in system components, Go in the network stack, and Python in the build system. <\/p>\n

During boot, a system manager is used, which includes appmgr for creating the initial program environment, sysmgr for forming the boot environment, and basemgr for configuring the user environment and organizing system login. An advanced sandbox isolation system ensures security, where new processes have no access to kernel objects, cannot allocate memory, and cannot execute code. Resource access is managed through a namespace system that defines available permissions.
