The developers of the CuteFishOS Linux distribution, based on the Debian package base, are developing a new user environment called CuteFish, which bears a resemblance to macOS. A friendly project mentioned is JingOS, which has a similar interface to CuteFish but is optimized for tablets. The project's developments are written in C++ using Qt and the KDE Frameworks libraries. The code is distributed under the GPLv3 license. While installation builds of the CuteFishOS distribution are not yet ready, the environment can already be tested by using packages for Arch Linux or installing an alternative build \u2014 Manjaro Cutefish.

Window management is handled by the KWin compositing manager with a set of additional plugins.
