Western Digital has advised users to urgently disconnect their WD My Book Live and My Book Live Duo storage devices from the internet following numerous complaints about the deletion of all content on the drives. Currently, it is known that an unknown malware is remotely triggering a factory reset of the devices, erasing all saved content. <\/p>\n

The WD My Book Live and My Book Live Duo devices support Ethernet connectivity and function as network storage with remote access to files and configuration changes via Western Digital's cloud service. Western Digital has stated that, so far, there is no evidence suggesting that the attack is carried out through a compromise of the company's cloud service rather than the users' end devices. <\/p>\n

It was presumed that the attack might have occurred through gaining control over individual user accounts in the cloud service, but according to reports from victims, some had disabled the cloud management feature. The main theory of what happened is based on the belief that the attack on WD My Book Live and My Book Live Duo is exploiting an unpatched vulnerability (CVE-2018-18472) in the firmware that allows remote code execution with root privileges. Support for WD My Book Live and My Book Live Duo storages was discontinued in 2015, and since then, no firmware updates have been released.
