Firefox developers have announced an expansion of the use of DNS over HTTPS (DoH), which will be enabled by default for users in Canada (previously, DoH was only applied by default for the US). The rollout of DoH for Canadian users will be carried out in phases: on July 20, DoH will be activated for 1% of users in Canada, and if no unforeseen issues arise, coverage will reach 100% by the end of September. <\/p>\n

The DoH providers offered in Firefox are selected based on trustworthiness requirements for DNS resolvers, stipulating that a DNS operator can use data obtained for resolution only to provide the service, must not store logs for longer than 24 hours, cannot share data with third parties, and must disclose information about data handling methods. The service must also commit to not censoring, filtering, interfering with, or blocking DNS traffic, except as required by law. <\/p>\n

It is worth noting that DoH can be useful for preventing leaks of requested hostnames through provider DNS servers, combating MITM attacks, and DNS traffic spoofing (for example, when connecting to public Wi-Fi), as well as countering DNS-level blocks (DoH cannot replace... VPN<\/a> in the area of bypassing blocking implemented at the DPI level) or for organizing operations in case of inability to directly access DNS servers (for example, when using a proxy). In a normal situation, DNS requests are sent directly to the DNS servers specified in the system configuration, but in the case of DoH, the request for resolution an IP address<\/a> of the host is encapsulated in HTTPS traffic and sent to an HTTP server, where the resolver processes the requests via the Web API. The existing DNSSEC standard uses encryption only for authenticating the client and server, but does not protect traffic from interception and does not guarantee the confidentiality of requests.
