After two years of development, the release of Debian GNU\/Linux 11.0 (Bullseye) is available for nine officially supported architectures: Intel IA-32\/x86 (i686), AMD64\/x86-64, ARM EABI (armel), 64-bit ARM (arm64), ARMv7 (armhf), mipsel, mips64el, PowerPC 64 (ppc64el), and IBM System z (s390x). Updates for Debian 11 will be released for a period of 5 years. <\/p>\n
Installation images are available for download via HTTP, jigdo, or BitTorrent. An unofficial nonfree installation image is also created, including proprietary firmware. LiveUSBs are available for amd64 and i386 architectures, with options for GNOME, KDE, and Xfce, as well as a multi-architecture DVD combining packages for the amd64 platform with additional packages for the i386 architecture. <\/p>\n
The repository features 59,551 binary packages (42,821 source packages), which is approximately 1,848 packages more than were offered in Debian 10. Compared to Debian 10, 11,294 new binary packages have been added, 9,519 (16%) outdated or abandoned packages removed, and 42,821 (72%) packages updated. The total size of all the source texts offered in the distribution amounts to 1,152,960,944 lines of code. A total of 6,208 developers participated in the release. <\/p>\n
Support for reproducible builds is provided for 95.7% of packages, allowing confirmation that the executable was built from the declared source texts and does not contain unauthorized changes, which could be inserted, for example, through an attack on the build infrastructure or a backdoor in the compiler. <\/p>\n

The Linux kernel has been updated to version 5.10 (version 4.19 was included in Debian 10).\n
The graphical stack and user environments have been updated: GNOME 3.38, KDE Plasma 5.20, LXDE 11, LXQt 0.16, MATE 1.24, Xfce 4.16. The LibreOffice office suite has been updated to version 7.0, and Calligra to version 3.2. GIMP 2.10.22, Inkscape 1.0.2, and Vim 8.2 have also been updated.\n
Server applications have been updated, including Apache httpd 2.4.48, BIND 9.16, Dovecot 2.3.13, Exim 4.94, Postfix 3.5, MariaDB 10.5, nginx 1.18, PostgreSQL 13, Samba 4.13, OpenSSH 8.4.\n
Development tools have been updated: GCC 10.2, LLVM\/Clang 11.0.1, OpenJDK 11, Perl 5.32, PHP 7.4, Python 3.9.1, Rust 1.48, Glibc 2.31.\n
The CUPS and SANE packages enable printing and scanning without the need for prior driver installation for printers and scanners connected to the system via USB port. Driverless mode is supported for printers that support the IPP Everywhere protocol, and for scanners, the eSCL and WSD protocols are supported (using the sane-escl and sane-airscan backends). To interact with a USB device as a network printer or scanner, the ipp-usb background process is used, implementing the IPP-over-USB protocol.\n
A new command \"open\" has been added, designed to open a file in the program set as default for the specified file type. By default, the command is associated with the xdg-open utility but can also be attached to the run-mailcap handler, which considers the update-alternatives subsystem bindings at launch.\n
In systemd, a unified hierarchy for cgroups (cgroup v2) is used by default. Cgroups v2 can be employed, for instance, to limit memory usage, CPU resources, and input\/output. A key difference between cgroups v2 and v1 is the use of a common cgroup hierarchy for all types of resources, instead of separate hierarchies for distributing CPU resources, regulating memory consumption, and managing input\/output. The separate hierarchies led to difficulties in coordinating interactions between handlers and resulted in additional kernel resource overhead when applying rules for a process referenced in different hierarchies. For those who do not intend to migrate to cgroup v2, the option to continue using cgroups v1 is still available.\n
Systemd includes a separate logging system (the systemd-journald service is activated), which is stored in the \/var\/log\/journal\/ directory and does not affect the traditional logs maintained by processes such as rsyslog (users can now remove rsyslog and rely solely on systemd-journald). Besides the systemd-journal group, users from the adm group have been granted access to read information from the journal. The journalctl utility has been enhanced with support for filtering using regular expressions.\n
A new driver for the exFAT file system is activated by default in the kernel, eliminating the need to install the exfat-fuse package. The exfatprogs package with a new set of utilities for creating and checking exFAT filesystems is also included (the old exfat-utils package remains available for installation but is not recommended for use).\n
Official support for the MIPS architecture has been discontinued.\n
The yescrypt algorithm is now used by default for password hashing instead of SHA-512.\n
Support for managing isolated containers with Podman has been added, including as a transparent replacement for Docker.\n
The format of lines in the \/etc\/apt\/sources.list file related to resolving security issues has been changed. The {dist}-updates lines have been renamed to {dist}-security. In sources.list, separating blocks \"[]\" is allowed by multiple spaces.\n
Panfrost and Lima drivers have been included, providing support for Mali GPUs used in boards based on ARM architecture.\n
The intel-media-va-driver has been activated for using hardware video decoding acceleration provided by Intel GPUs based on the Broadwell microarchitecture and newer.\n
The grub2 now supports the SBAT mechanism (UEFI Secure Boot Advanced Targeting), addressing issues with certificate revocation for UEFI Secure Boot.\n
The graphical installer now builds with libinput instead of the evdev driver, improving touchpad support. The use of the underscore character in the username specified during installation for the first account is now allowed. Packages for supporting virtualization systems are installed if detection of execution in their managed environments is successful. A new Homeworld theme has been implemented.

The installer now allows the installation of the GNOME Flashback desktop, which continues the development of the classic GNOME panel code, the Metacity window manager, and applets previously available in fallback mode for GNOME 3.\n
Support for UEFI and Secure Boot has been added to the win32-loader application, which allows the installation of Debian from Windows without creating a separate installation media.\n
The graphical installer is now available for the ARM64 architecture.\n
Support for ARM platforms and devices such as puma-rk3399, Orange Pi One Plus, ROCK Pi 4 (A, B, C), Banana Pi BPI-M2-Ultra, Banana Pi BPI-M3, NanoPi NEO Air, FriendlyARM NanoPi NEO Plus2, Pinebook, Pinebook Pro, Olimex A64-Olinuxino, A64-Olinuxino-eMMC, SolidRun LX2160A Honeycomb, Clearfog CX, SolidRun Cubox-i Solo\/DualLite, Turris MOX, Librem 5, and OLPC XO-1.75 has been added.\n
Creation of single-disk CD images with Xfce has been discontinued, as well as the creation of 2 and 3 DVD ISO images for amd64\/i386 systems. <\/ul>\n
