Mozilla is conducting an experiment to switch 1% of Firefox users to using Microsoft's Bing search engine by default. The experiment started on September 6 and will last until the end of January 2022. Users can check their participation in Mozilla's experiments on the page «about:studies». For users who prefer other search engines, the settings still allow for choosing a search engine of their choice. <\/p>\n

We remind you that the English version of Firefox by default offers Google, while the Russian and Turkish versions offer Yandex, and the versions for China offer Baidu. Default search engines have contracts for paying commissions for referrals, which generate the lion's share of Mozilla's revenue. For example, in 2019, Mozilla's revenue share from partnerships with search engines was 88%. The deal with Google for search traffic amounts to about $400 million per year. This arrangement was extended until August 2023, but further cooperation is in question, so Mozilla is preparing to change its main search partner.
