Google has published the source code for the HIBA (Host Identity Based Authorization) project, which offers an additional authorization mechanism for organizing user access via SSH tied to hosts (checking whether access to a specific resource is allowed during authentication using public keys). Integration with OpenSSH is achieved by specifying a HIBA handler in the AuthorizedPrincipalsCommand directive in \/etc\/ssh\/sshd_config. The project code is written in C and is distributed under the BSD license. <\/p>\n

HIBA utilizes the built-in authentication mechanisms based on OpenSSH certificates for flexible and centralized management of user authorization tied to hosts, while eliminating the need for periodic changes to the authorized_keys and authorized_users files on the hosts being accessed. Instead of storing a list of allowed public keys and access conditions in the authorized_(keys|users) files, HIBA integrates information about user-host bindings directly into the certificates themselves. In particular, it proposes extensions for host certificates and user certificates that store the host parameters and conditions for granting user access. <\/p>\n

Host-side checking is initiated through a call to the hiba-chk handler specified in the AuthorizedPrincipalsCommand directive. This handler decodes the integrated extensions in the certificates and makes a decision regarding granting or blocking access based on them. Access rules are defined centrally at the level of the Certificate Authority (CA) and are integrated into the certificates at the time of their generation. <\/p>\n

At the Certificate Authority level, a common list of available permissions (hosts to which connections are allowed) and a list of users authorized to use these permissions are maintained. To generate signed certificates with integrated information about the permissions, the utility hiba-gen has been proposed, and the functionality required to create a certificate authority has been moved to the script iba-ca.sh. <\/p>\n

When a user connects, the credentials specified in the certificate are verified by the digital signature of the certificate authority, allowing all checks to be performed entirely on the target host to which the connection is made, without referring to external services. The list of public keys of the certificate authority that issues SSH certificates is specified using the TrustedUserCAKeys directive. <\/p>\n

In addition to directly linking users to hosts, HIBA allows for more flexible access rules. For example, information such as location and service type can be linked to hosts, and when defining user access rules, connections can be permitted to all hosts with a specified service type or to hosts in a designated location.
